Handle System
The Handle System is the Corporation for National Research Initiatives's proprietary registry assigning persistent identifiers, or handles, to information resources, and for resolving "those handles into the information necessary to locate, access, and otherwise make use of the resources".
As with handles used elsewhere in computing, Handle System handles are opaque, and encode no information about the underlying resource, being bound only to metadata regarding the resource. Consequently, the handles are not rendered invalid by changes to the metadata.
The system was developed by Bob Kahn at the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI). The original work was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) between 1992 and 1996, as part of a wider framework for distributed digital object services, and was thus contemporaneous with the early deployment of the World Wide Web, with similar goals.
The Handle System was first implemented in autumn 1994, and was administered and operated by CNRI until December 2015, when a new "multi-primary administrator" (MPA) mode of operation was introduced. The DONA Foundation now administers the system's Global Handle Registry and accredits MPAs, including CNRI and the International DOI Foundation.
The system currently provides the underlying infrastructure for such handle-based systems as Digital Object Identifiers and DSpace, which are mainly used to provide access to scholarly, professional and government documents and other information resources.
CNRI provides specifications and the source code for reference implementations for the servers and protocols used in the system under a royalty-free "Public License", similar to an open source license.
Thousands of handle services are currently running. Over 1000 of these are at universities and libraries, but they are also in operation at national laboratories, research groups, government agencies, and commercial enterprises, receiving over 200 million resolution requests per month.

Digital object identifier
A digital object identifier (DOI) is a persistent identifier or handle used to uniquely identify various objects, standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). DOIs are an implementation of the Handle System; they also fit within the URI system (Uniform Resource Identifier). They are widely used to identify academic, professional, and government information, such as journal articles, research reports, data sets, and official publications.
A DOI aims to resolve to its target, the information object to which the DOI refers. This is achieved by binding the DOI to metadata about the object, such as a URL where the object is located. Thus, by being actionable and interoperable, a DOI differs from ISBNs or ISRCs which are identifiers only. The DOI system uses the indecs Content Model for representing metadata.
The DOI for a document remains fixed over the lifetime of the document, whereas its location and other metadata may change. Referring to an online document by its DOI should provide a more stable link than directly using its URL. But if its URL changes, the publisher must update the metadata for the DOI to maintain the link to the URL. It is the publisher's responsibility to update the DOI database. If they fail to do so, the DOI resolves to a dead link, leaving the DOI useless.
The developer and administrator of the DOI system is the International DOI Foundation (IDF), which introduced it in 2000. Organizations that meet the contractual obligations of the DOI system and are willing to pay to become a member of the system can assign DOIs. The DOI system is implemented through a federation of registration agencies coordinated by the IDF. By late April 2011 more than 50 million DOI names had been assigned by some 4,000 organizations, and by April 2013 this number had grown to 85 million DOI names assigned through 9,500 organizations.

Uniform Resource Name
A Uniform Resource Name (URN) is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that uses the urn scheme. URNs are globally unique persistent identifiers assigned within defined namespaces so they will be available for a long period of time, even after the resource which they identify ceases to exist or becomes unavailable. URNs cannot be used to directly locate an item and need not be resolvable, as they are simply templates that another parser may use to find an item.

European Open Science Cloud European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is one of the partnerships supported by the European Commission and the Member States. It aims to realise a “web of fair data and related services”. EOSC provides also virtual environment with access to various services that support open science and the management of the research data lifecycle, from sharing to processing and preserving data. The objective of EOSC is to give the European Union a global lead in research data management and ensure that European scientists reap the full benefits of data-driven science. The EOSC Association will develop and implement EOSC through financial, in-kind and policy commitments from three tiers of stakeholders in the EOSC community: The contribution from the European Commission. The contribution from the Member States and national funders. The contribution from research-performing organisations, service-providing organisations, funding organisations and other EOSC relevant organisations through the membership in the EOSC Association. The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) strategically defines the roadmap for implementing and further developing EOSC with the wider stakeholder community. CSC is a member of the EOSC Association since December 2020. In January 2021, we received from the Finland’s Ministry for Education and Culture (OKM) the mandate to organise and coordinate the EOSC Finnish Forum. It is the national initiative aimed at engaging the Finnish stakeholders in the EOSC ecosystem and at assessing the impact and opportunities of EOSC. CSC is also driving many EOSC related technological and policy developments in several EC-funded projects.

EUDAT
EUDAT Collaborative Data Infrastructure EUDAT is a network of more than 20 European research organisations as well as data and computing centres. The organizations host together the EUDAT Collaborative Data Infrastructure (EUDAT CDI), one of the largest infrastructures of integrated data services and resources supporting research in Europe. EUDAT CDI allows European researchers and practitioners across disciplines to preserve, find, access and process data in a trusted environment. It has been developed in close collaboration with over 50 research communities of all scientific disciplines. Aside from the research infrastructure, the EUDAT network itself offers various research data management services and storage resources. With them EUDAT is supporting multiple research communities as well as individuals through a geographically distributed, resilient network. EUDAT CDI acknowledges FAIR principles and supports sharing and reusing open data through its services, while recognising that not all data will be completely unrestricted. EUDAT CDI has supported European projects with its services for research data lifecycle, as well as through user communities and institutions. It also advocates the best practices in research data management, providing valuable experience and expertise to various projects and institutions. CSC has been involved in EUDAT collaboration since 2010 as one of its founding members, and is overall one of the key partners driving EUDAT agenda. We offer both free and tailored EUDAT services for data management and sharing for Finnish research communities and individual researchers. CSC is heavily involved in EUDAT CDI’s administration, including leading the EUDAT CDI Secretariat, chairing the EUDAT CDI Council and having a representative in the EUDAT CDI Executive Board. Along with the Dutch SURF, CSC is the co-owner of EUDAT Ltd., a legal entity that can make contracts and participate in EU projects on EUDAT CDI’s behalf. Being a member of EUDAT provides CSC with a position of influence in the European infrastructure landscape. For example, EUDAT CDI is one of the key providers in European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). It has enabled CSC to receive funding for several EOSC-related project, which EUDAT also has positions in steering of. The membership of EUDAT also allows CSC to provide high-quality data services based on EUDAT technology. These services are part of CSC’s service portfolio, offering an option for customisable solutions. The collaboration provides CSC experts with better options for knowledge and skills transfer in developing, operating and supporting EUDAT data management services as part of a European consortium.

Ecological Metadata Language
Ecological Metadata Language (EML) is a metadata standard developed by and for the ecology discipline. It is based on prior work done by the Ecological Society of America and others, including the Knowledge Network for Biocomplexity. EML is a set of XML schema documents that allow for the structural expression of metadata. It was developed specifically to allow researchers to document a typical data set in the ecological sciences.
EML is largely designed to describe digital resources, however, it may also be used to describe non-digital resources such as paper maps and other non-digital media.
The Knowledge Network for Biocomplexity project has developed a software client specifically to address this need. Morpho is data management software intended for generating metadata in EML format. Morpho is part of the DataONE Investigator Toolkit, and therefore intended to facilitate data sharing and reuse among ecologists and environmental scientists.
